10 years of glasses!

Hi everyone!

I wrote a post nearly a year ago about my braces story. I spoke about what I had to go through in order to get the teeth I have now and how I felt through the various stages of the process. Along with the dreaded braces, I have been blessed with bad eyesight - meaning my look through school was very "Ugly Betty"-esque. However, do I think it's made me the person I am today? Most definitely.

I've been wearing glasses for about 10 years. I remember the day when I couldn't read out the words on the interactive whiteboard in Year 3. One day all was fine and the next, I was sitting in the opticians chair trying to work out what the letters said on the board ahead of me. Then I was graced with some snazzy new specs! Unfortunately, I am unable to both: remember what ones they were or find a picture of me with them on. I recall them being the wire thin ones and they were pink! How lovely.
But my eyesight resisted to stay put. 12 months later and my sight had gotten worse - how brilliant! (A LOT of sarcasm will be in this post by the way...) My next pair were these round grey and black versions of the pink pair I previously had. They were all the rage during 2007 - which is what I'm telling myself so I don't cringe too hard at these pictures!

My following pair have been famously known in my house as "The Ugly Betty glasses" rightly so they're very similar to hers! I had these between the ages 11-12 and as you can probably tell, my eyesight refused to stay put!

To change everything - I decided to go for some thicker brown glasses on my next appointment. I loved these so much so that they have found their way at the bottom of the English channel...Yes I dropped them on the beach on the coast of France and I've assumed they've been dragged down to the bottom of the ocean... (no worries I got a duplicate pair as soon as I got back, that holiday to France was very...Blurry!)

I decided to go back to a thinner frame, I wasn't feeling the thick brown specs that I had previously owned. This pair has probably been the longest pair I've owned. My sight (thankfully!) didn't change for nearly two years. I thought I finally had gotten better (if you class around -3.25 in each eye good) and I didn't need to spend so much on frames again and again! Alas, no. These glasses have seen in a lot in my life, so I have kept them to this day as a little memory for me!

My next glasses came along with the braces. They were a complete game changer because I hated them at first! Bigger and rounder is what I went for and they didn't last long either!

When the train tracks came, so did this next pair. I wasn't feeling the round pair that I had so I went back to square glasses. In all honesty I thought these were the same as before but clearly they're not!

And finally, my last 3 pairs have been of a similar style. Big, oval and black/brown has been my statement go to look for the last couple of years. However, I rarely wear my glasses now so it isn't often when I go outside with any of these on! It's not that I hate them, but the opportunity of wearing contact lenses has now become an option to me. As my day schedule is constantly changing, contact lenses are much easier for me to wear than my glasses. However, some days I am sure to wear my glasses because they have always been a big part of my life!

Countless opticians appointments have been a regular thing in my life growing up. In the last year I've changed opticians because I felt like they weren't right for me anymore. My eyesight sadly has not gotten any better, so I have no idea when I will actually have solid eyesight without having to change pairs of lenses every year. (NHS vouchers will soon be out of the case once I've finished college so the expense is going to be a bit more pricey!)

I don't think I would ever of avoided the glasses problem since most of my family members all wear them, I just wish I didn't have to start wearing them at such an early age. But like I said previously, they have made me the person I am today! Trust me - glasses aren't always fun, having to shower with blurry vision isn't always great, but hey - at least I get to rock some fancy new shades every now and again!

See you in the next blog post,
